There are many reasons to love berries. They are delicious, practical and really good for you. Of course, berries are delicious in yoghurt, muesli or as a quick snack (no cutting or peeling required!). But they are good for so much more than that.

If you want to take your berries to the next level, try these simple recipes. But first you should make sure that you select and store these delicate fruits correctly. Here's how:

Check the packaging. Before you put a pack in the trolley, briefly check that the berries are firm, dry and mould-free. Do this again at home. One mouldy berry can ruin the whole bouquet. If you find a soggy or weeping berry, take it out and throw it away. A dry berry is a happy berry. Store the berries in the front part of the refrigerator. It is less humid there. To get the most out of your berries, eat them soon after you buy them.

Lemon goat cheese dip with mini berry skewers

Did you know that berries are one of the fruits with the lowest sugar content? Prepare this dip a day or two in advance and cover it in the fridge. If some of the liquid settles, you can simply stir the dip again. Prepare the berries and skewer them just before serving.

Preparation:

In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of low-fat Greek yoghurt, 2 tablespoons of fresh goat cheese, 2 tablespoons of honey and the zest of one lemon (or more if you want it extra lemony).

Thread 1 cup halved strawberries and 1 cup blackberries onto toothpicks/ skewers. Then serve with the dip.

Sweet and savoury peanut blueberry crostini

If you can't decide between sweet, spicy or savoury, these little toasts are just what you need.

Preparation:

Place 8 baguette slices on a baking tray. Spray both sides with olive oil cooking spray. Season with salt and pepper. Bake the baguette slices in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and arrange on a serving platter.

In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of curry powder with 1 tablespoon of warm water. Then add ½ cup peanut butter, 1 tablespoon maple syrup and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract and stir well. Then spread the peanut butter mixture on each toast and top with fresh blueberries.
