Small annoyances come at you every day, all day long. And even if they are "small", like any stress, they activate our fight-or-flight response and trigger the release of hormones like cortisol. When these hormones are released frequently, we end up with high hormone levels in our bodies, which can be detrimental to our health in the long run.

When you are ready to let go of these things, you must first find out what is causing you so much grief. Take time to reflect on the past week. Think about all the stressors you experienced and how you reacted to them. When did your heart race? When did your muscles tense up? Were you too tired? Too hungry?

Once you've identified your little stressors, you can try these tips to stop letting them get you down.

Think about what factors you can control. The only thing you can control is your efforts and attitude towards certain things. You will be much more productive if you put your efforts into the things you can control/change.

Strive to become more mindful. Mindfulness exercises help bring us into the present moment. They help us to press the pause button and encourage us to become aware of what we are thinking and feeling in the here and now. This interrupts the stressful thoughts and sensations that might otherwise overwhelm us and allows us to consciously examine the situation and gain control, rather than simply reacting unconsciously.

Set yourself a worry timer. Choose between one and three minutes. During this time, focus all your energy on the problem by writing down your thoughts or just thinking about the problem. Once the time is up, let go of the problem.

First, take a moment to acknowledge that you are upset, angry or disappointed. Realise that these feelings are normal but not helpful. Instead, ask yourself: "Is there a way to solve the problem? If you are annoyed by factors that you cannot control, try not to waste your energy on them.
